Jim Manawatu - Captain

I started working for Whale Watch Kaikoura back in 2000 as a guide. Since then I have moved on to become a captain. Over the years I have continued to be amazed and humbled by the marine life, its variety and the power of the ocean and the life that it brings. I love being able to share this with people from all over the world.

My career at Whale Watch Kaikoura started back in 1995, I started out as a guide at sea, then went on to complete my maritime training as a captain and more recently have moved into the marketing and communication side of things. Being able to view these magnificent creatures in their natural environment still continues to amaze me. There is nothing like being able to see people eyes light up when seeing a whale for the first time – or being able to represent the company overseas in countries like India and SE Asia. I love the diversity of my job – doesn’t get much better than this.

I began as a guide in 2001. Every day is different for us as you never know what you are going to see, there is nothing more exciting than heading out and seeing the unexpected such as an Orca passing by or the largest animal on our planet, the blue whale – a rare and most welcome sight. It is an absolute joy bringing people out from around the world to see the majestic and gentle giants of the sea, and the spectacular scenery is breath taking. Over my years at Whale Watch Kaikoura I have also taken on the role from a guide to a captain which brings on new and exciting challenges, as a captain it is important to me to give our guests the best possible experience out on the sea.

Having spent a lifetime on the sea travelling around the globe finally I have found an enjoyable job right here in the beautiful location of Kaikoura. I find sperm whales most fascinating and mysterious creatures out of all the cetaceans we encounter.
