The Team at Whale Watch Kaikoura is committed to the care and protection of the environment.
We seek to:
- Minimise Waste,
- Promote Recycling,
- Use eco-friendly products
- Reduce our Energy consumption and carbon footprint.
- Minimise our impact on the marine life.
Annually agreed strategic objectives and departmental targets within the company's business plan underpin our commitment and are regularly reviewed and monitored for effectiveness. Where financially viable, we give preference to suppliers who themselves have sound environmental policies and practices.
Education is an important aspect of the experience we deliver and something we have spent a lot of time and capital on, with our aim being to send our customers away knowing that they have learnt something new about the marine life in the Kaikoura Canyon and our environment. We at Whale Watch® work hard to support our environment by undertaking a number of actions. Many of these you will not see, but some you may notice.
A few examples of actions that you may not see include:
- Using jet propulsion units on all our vessels to minimise noise and prevent mammal strikes with exposed propellers.
- Storing all rubbish and waste water on vessels for discharge on land
- Making land available to the Dept of Conservation for the endangered Hutton's Shearwater translocation programme
- Providing sponsorship to our local schools, community groups and sports clubs
- Supporting and contributing financially to research conducted in the Kaikoura area on Whales, Dolphins and Seals.
This policy and all relevant obligations and responsibilities have been communicated throughout the organisation. If you are interested to know about what we do, please feel free to ask us.
"Whale Watch® Kaikoura is committed to providing a quality whale watching experience while carefully managing the use of a rare natural resource. We are visitors to the world of the whales and respect it as such at all times. As a Maori - owned company, Whale Watch cherishes the twin values of hospitality to visitors and reverence for the natural world. It is a philosophy that embraces people, the land, the sea and all living things as one."
